The mechanics of a proper crimp
Good technique starts before the pliers ever close, threading the wire through the pellet fully and centring it so both ends sit evenly within the jaws rather than off to one side. The pliers need to be squeezed in one firm, complete motion rather than a partial squeeze followed by a second attempt, since re-crimping an already partially deformed pellet rarely produces as clean a result as a single decisive closure. The jaws should fully meet, leaving no visible gap in the lead around the wire, and the embossed die mark should transfer clearly and completely across the full stamping surface, not just a partial impression on one side.
Equipment condition matters as much as hand technique.
Even a well-trained hand can’t produce a clean crimp with worn or misaligned sealing pliers. The die face wears down gradually with heavy use, producing a progressively shallower and less legible stamp long before the pliers seem obviously damaged to a casual user. Regular inspection of the pliers themselves, checking the die face for wear and confirming the jaws still meet fully flush, catches this decline before it starts showing up as illegible seals in the field.
